Using our Positive Energy Planning Process PEPP, we can help you achieve your energy and climate goals, by co-creating, developing, and supporting Positive Energy Districts and Neighbourhoods - where people, nature and businesses can thrive.

With our broad expertise and experience of working with Positive Energy Districts, we at White Arkitekter, can lead the process of creating attractive and energy positive districts and neighbourhood’s.

We do that through the development, co-creation, and implementation of strategic, holistic, tailored positive-energy roadmaps – which have a high degree of acceptance amongst key stakeholders.

PED-ID is a new innovation project that aims to accelerate the energy transition in Europe by laying a solid foundation for at least three European Positive Energy Districts (PEDs), including one in Sweden. Uppsala Business Park is a pilot project and could be the first to become energy positive.

The PED-ID project, initiated by White Arkitekter, has been granted funding under the Viable Cities strategic innovation programme funded by Vinnova, the Swedish Energy Agency and Formas.

Energy as an urban development issue

Cities currently account for 70% of global carbon dioxide emissions. This makes cities central to the climate transition and the implementation of Positive Energy Districts (PEDs) a cornerstone.

Although the energy issue is crucial for cities and municipalities to achieve climate neutrality, it is rarely included in spatial planning. However, we are seeing a growing awareness of the importance and potential of making buildings, neighbourhoods, and eventually whole cities, becoming net producers of clean energy, not just consumers.

This is why we have developed our Positive Energy Planning Process – PEPP.

Society is facing major challenges – we are in the midst of an energy crisis, and the burgeoning effects of climate change. That's why there is a need to create more Positive Energy Districts.

Why PEDs?

PEDs are a cornerstone for achieving climate targets. They can help you and your community achieve energy and climate goals – efficiently and economically.

PEDs also provide greater security of energy supply from local sustainable energy sources and reduce energy demand, leading to lower and more predictable energy costs for businesses and other consumers. They also improve air quality and the quality of life – making the area more attractive for local businesses and residents.

They are also an integral part of a future sustainable energy system, as outlined in the EU SET-Plan 100 Positive Energy Districs by 2025. Therefore, PEDs will be well equipped for future climate and energy legislation.

Selected projects

Climate Innovation District, Leeds

By increasing the energy and resource efficiency of urban developments, infrastructure and transportation systems, we can design a powerful response to climate change. Leeds is a case in point. The city’s Climate Innovation District turns a central brownfield site into a resilient, green, mixed-use neighbourhood of 516 low energy homes with integrated amenities for everyday life.

Tamarinden, Örebro

Focus on smart urban development as Tamarinden in Örebro grows. An entire district is being developed with future energy solutions to accelerate the transition to sustainable cities and to better cope with the electrification of society.

Råängen, Lund

Råängen challenges the norm for how we usually develop and build real estate in Sweden. On behalf of the Cathedral of Lund, we are leading this ambitious and innovative urban development project. With a strong value base based on the cathedral’s historical and contemporary role in Lund’s urban development, coupled with an exploratory working process, it is hoped that Råängen will contribute to new knowledge about how we design the living environments of the future.

Realising Positive Energy Districts is a tough challenge – but White Arkitekter is an experienced change agent and we have the skills, experience, and power to do it. PEPP is a well-developed methodology that guides you through the whole process.

Why PEPP?

From day one, White Arkitekter has been more than architects. We are also urban developers, planners and community builders. For us, it goes without saying that energy is an urban development issue, and effective collaboration is the key to success. Research shows that stakeholder engagement led by a trusted intermediary is essential. Process management, stakeholder engagement and communication, combined with technical and financial expertise, are at the heart of our PEPP process.

In practice, we lead a collaborative process for the development and implementation of strategic, holistic and well-anchored PED roadmaps – which have a high degree of acceptance among key stakeholders. We can also provide climate calculations and building engineering expertise to help make buildings and whole districts climate-positive.

The PEPP process does not just focus on kilowatt hours and carbon dioxide equivalents, but is a method for developing attractive and energy-positive districts that contribute to human well-being, safeguard biodiversity and thus create the conditions for sustainable living – where people, businesses and nature can flourish.
