Lumi finalist in four categories at the Life Sciences, Tech & Research Clusters Awards

Our project Lumi is shortlisted in four categories at the Life Sciences, Tech and Research Clusters Awards, celebrating outstanding achievements across the life science, innovation and technology sectors. The lab and office building designed by White Arkitekter for Vasakronan has garnered international praise for its combination of design, cutting edge reuse and class leading sustainability performance.

Lumi stands as one of Sweden’s most ambitious reuse projects – a large-scale testbed for circular architecture. In this unique project, the concrete frame of a 1970s building has been extended and re-clad, while nearly everything practically possible has been reused – from plasterboards, bricks and doors to radiators and electrical boxes. The result is a contemporary laboratory and office building with exceptionally low climate impact. Scoring an impressive 99 out of 110 possible points under the LEED certification system, Lumi has achieved the highest score in Europe and is currently the world’s top-rated office building.

We’re honored to be among the finalists. Together with our skilled collaborators and a courageous client, Lumi demonstrates that large-scale reuse can deliver both architectural quality and significant environmental benefits even for the most demanding and complex uses.
Anders Tväråna, lead architect

Meeting the demands of state-of-the-art life science facilities while working within the confines of the original, low floor height structure of the original 70’s building was a challenge that was overcome with ingenuity and close cooperation.

Our digital tools played a decisive role. Every part of the existing building was surveyed and catalogued in a database. The new building was then modelled down to the smallest detail. The BIM model is so detailed that it serves as the sole construction documentation, and the project is entirely drawing-free. Climate calculation specialists could carry out continuous assessments directly from the model, making sure the project stayed on track to realise the ambitious sustainability goals.

This level of precision made it possible to combine technical complexity with circular design, allowing the team to test, verify and refine solutions throughout the process.

The Life Sciences, Tech & Research Clusters Conference and Awards is presented by Construction News and Property Week. The winners will be announced at the conference held at the Hilton Bankside in London on the 26th of June.
