Responsibility, curiosity, involvement and respect are core values that imbue everything we do. Our values remain the constant in a world of change.

70 years of Community Involvement and Collaboration

White Arkitekter was founded in 1951 in Gothenburg by Sidney White with the aim to improve society through architecture. His legacy lives on in our ambition to contribute towards a more sustainable world. The ideals of collective thinking and employee ownership are as strong as ever and today we are one of Scandinavia’s leading architectural practices with around 600 employees and presence in Sweden, Norway, the United Kingdom, Germany, Canada and East Africa. We are collectively owned by 80% of our staff members, 111 of whom are partners; working together to benefit society as a whole.

We value involvement and participation and respect the equality of every individual. Everyone has the right to a sustainable life. This is the foundation of our architecture and our culture. Our projects evolve in collaboration with our clients, users, partners, colleagues and other stakeholders.

By being good listeners, understanding different points of view and being devoted to collaboration, we create lasting value.

Architecture for a Sustainable Life • Annual and Sustainability Report 2023

2023 was affected by major global unrest and a weaker market for the construction and property sectors. Despite this, the pace of the sustainable transition is accelerating, not least due to increased pressure from the EU. This transition is crucial for people and the environment, but also necessary for companies to remain relevant and competitive.

White’s mission, to enable sustainable life through the art of architecture, is more relevant than ever.

In order for society to achieve global and national goals, we need to take immediate action. No one can drive change on their own, but together we have the power to turn the development towards a more sustainable future.

Sustainability as our driving force

Societies should strive for being equal, safe, and inclusive. Their design is crucial for human health and quality of life. Meanwhile, the pressure on ecosystems is strained and the impact of climate change is already evident in many places. Consequently, the design of urban public environments is of crucial importance for how sustainable a city can actually be, environmentally, socially, and economically.

In order for society to achieve global and national sustainability goals, we need to strengthen collaboration within and between industries and across nations. We are convinced that with sustainability as a driving force, together we can create long-term values for the project, society and the planet.

We look to solve great challenges through design, creativity and a humanistic approach.

Curiosity and exploration

Our curiosity is reflected in the way we work. We believe that search for new knowledge will strengthen our offer for the future. Therefore, we continuously invest in research and development. Through design, creativity and a humanistic approach, we look to solve great challenges. We believe that architecture is shaped by the unique qualities of its context. This makes us radical contextualists. By sharing our knowledge, we increase the ways in which we can contribute to overcoming societal challenges, as well as attracting collaborators that share the same passion and goals.

Our explorative culture is reflected in our investment; ten percent of our annual turnover is dedicated to R&D. The employees’ collective knowledge is our main asset. Through White Research Lab, our organisation for practical research and development, we challenge practices to create more sustainable architecture and a better society for all.

White has strong values: we will be exploratory, responsible and act with participation and respect.

Responsible Business Development

A strong commitment to society and an ethical, democratic fundamental view are the cornerstones of White’s corporate culture. Today, it is associated with major risks in not taking responsibility for how the business affects people or the environment. In addition, the pandemic has shown that there are unexpected threats that can have a huge impact on both the company and society at large. The aim for our business is to develop sustainable architecture and values for our stakeholders and our strategic plan sets a clear and challenging direction. Our mission is to enable sustainable life through the art of architecture.
