Two nominations for White Arkitekter in European Healthcare Design Awards

We are pleased to announce that the new Velindre Cancer Centre and the Arthroplasty Clinic, Bromma Hospital are nominated for the European Healthcare Design Awards. The winners will be presented at the European Healthcare Design Congress in London on the 13th of June.

The European Healthcare Design Awards is one of the most prestigious architecture awards for healthcare architecture. The new Velindre Cancer Centre is nominated in the Future Healthcare Design category and the transformation project Arthroplasty Clinic Bromma Hospital in the Design for Adaption and Transformation category. Projects that represent some of the biggest challenges that the industry is facing, that is sustainability and reuse.

In addition to sustainability, our healthcare projects are always characterised by a solid implementation of current research, which is something that unites the new Velindre Cancer Centre and the Arthroplasty Clinic. Both projects have been developed with a strong focus on health in terms of daylight, views and natural materials, contributing to a relaxing environment for patients, visitors and staff.

Arthroplasty Clinic, Bromma Hospital

Arthroplasty Clinic, Bromma Hospital
The real estate company Vectura acquired Bromma Hospital in March 2020 and the premises were inaugurated two years later. The new clinic provides Bromma Hospital with a state-of-the-art operating environment for hip and knee replacement surgery. Despite major challenges with low ceiling heights (3.3m), the project succeeded in developing advanced treatment environments with a relaxing atmosphere, reflecting Vectura’s vision of revitalising a technically obsolete healthcare building into a vibrant centre for healthcare. With a focus on reuse, the project is a good example of how an older building can be brought back to life, benefiting both the story of the site’s history and the neighbourhood as a whole.

We are very proud to be nominated this year with a transformation project. The project is particularly close to our hearts with its great care for design, people, technology and the environment. Thanks to the great engagement of both Vectura and Ledplastikcentrum, we reached the goal - and in a short time.

The new Velindre Cancer Centre

The new Velindre Cancer Centre
The new Velindre Cancer Centre in Wales is being developed by The ACORN consortium led by developer and investor Kajima and has high sustainability ambitions. The design is characterised by low-carbon, bio-based materials that promote health and well-being. Materials such as wood and lime and clay renders create a natural and calming environment.

The new Velindre Cancer Centre has high sustainability ambitions, which makes it even more exciting to be nominated for EHD. We are proud to develop healthcare environments that support the important work of the NHS and look forward to realising this project together with all partners.
Michael Woodford, London Studio Director, White Arkitekter

The design is developed to ensure minimum impact on the site. The landscape strategy aims to keep the site as wild as possible while developing new landscape areas such as a community kitchen garden, informal play areas and places to relax.

Presentations during the EHD Congress
In addition to the nominations, both the new Velindre Cancer Centre and  the Arthroplasty Clinic, Bromma Hospital will be presented during the European Healthcare Design Congress that takes place 12-14 June in London. We look forward to that!
