Vattentorget at Slussen, Stockholm

Vattentorget at Slussen, Stockholm

Vattentorget is a truly unique destination at the heart of the new Slussen. Strategically positioned above the outlet between Lake Mälaren and the Baltic Sea, it offers a vibrant meeting place where visitors can enjoy unparalleled views of the water and Stockholm’s iconic skyline.

A space with high architectural qualities

Vattentorget is a new car-free, flexible connection between Gamla Stan and Södermalm. With generous pedestrian and cycling pathways, it provides a vital solution for one of Stockholm’s busiest urban areas. The square seamlessly integrates critical water regulation infrastructure—such as spillway gates and the small boat lock—with a modern public space that invites visitors to connect closely with Lake Mälaren and the Baltic Sea.

Vattentorget is a prime example of how infrastructure can harmoniously coexist with high-quality public spaces. Expansive wooden decks and seating areas encourage visitors to pause, enjoy the stunning waterfront views, immerse themselves in the city’s vibrant atmosphere, and observe boats navigating the locks or the flow of Mälaren’s water—all in optimal sunlight. These dynamic, year-round changes lend the site a distinctive character and appeal. Beneath Slussbron, two new venues will further activate the space during the evenings and at night.

This project highlights how integrating infrastructure with architectural excellence can generate significant added value. The material palette respects the site’s historical context with its robust quay materials while introducing a contemporary aesthetic.

A modern expression with materials that honour history

For this project, we collaborated with Stockholm Konst to integrate public artworks into the site. Under the northern end of Slussbron, visitors can discover a cabinet of curiosities showcasing archaeological finds from Slussen, alongside glass art by Ebba Matz. During the summer, temporary art installations in the spillway basins will further enhance the square as a dynamic public space.

The material palette bridges the site’s historical character and a modern expression. Large-dimension timber dominates, while granite and concrete are used for pathways to ensure durability, ease of maintenance, and traffic safety. Custom-designed railings in stainless steel, topped with Accoya wood, add a refined touch.

The new Slussen in Stockholm is one of Sweden’s largest infrastructure and urban transformation projects, spanning over 14 hectares. In addition to Vattentorget, it includes the southern part of Skeppsbron and Munkbrokajen on the Gamla Stan side, as well as Katarinaparken, Ryssgården, Södermalmstorg, Mälarterrassen, and Mariagränd on Södermalm. Exceptional engineering was required to overcome geotechnical challenges, with nearly 1,700 piles drilled 50 metres into bedrock to stabilise the area amid deep rock layers, fault zones, and old structures. Over 70% of the Slussen project is located underwater.

The project has spanned over a decade, with White’s landscape architects overseeing the detailed design of all public spaces, including squares, pathways, and parks.
