Maserhallen Sports Centre in Borlänge

Maserhallen Sports Centre in Borlänge

Maserhallen Sports Centre in Borlänge, originally envisioned in the 1960s, was more than just a multi-purpose hall – it was a symbol of modernity, a vibrant meeting place for community and recreation. Decades later, its popularity endures, but the demand has outgrown the space. Now, a new building is poised to breathe fresh life into the entire complex and its surroundings.

A building that encourages sport and the joy of movement

The new facility includes a sports hall that can be divided into three sections, a gymnastics hall, areas for martial arts, and a gym. It is a training facility that prioritises the needs of local schools and community sports groups, complementing the existing Maserhallen with its services. A building designed to promote sport and the joy of movement.

Central to the project is a commitment to sustainable construction, aligned with Borlänge municipality’s progressive timber strategy. This initiative promotes the use of wood in both public and private projects, supporting the local construction and timber industries. The choice of timber for the sports hall reflects not only practical considerations but a broader vision of environmental responsibility and craftsmanship. The material’s natural warmth enhances the building’s aesthetic, while its structural integrity ensures a durable and welcoming space, embodying contemporary ideals in both sport and architecture.

The new building defers to the modernist and distinctive Maserhallen with a restrained character, while incorporating playful elements that convey a sense of joy in movement.

Safety has been a central focus, with the aim of creating an inviting meeting place that encourages movement.

Safety has been a central focus, with the goal of creating an attractive meeting place that encourages physical activity. The structure consists of two volumes: the lower volume aligns with the design lines of adjacent buildings along Masergatan, while the higher volume marks the entrance. The façades of the lower volume feature window slits in a repetitive rhythm, echoing Maserhallen, while the higher volume has a façade of wood panels and wooden slats positioned between the windows. A key design principle has been to make the building’s activities visible from the outside, while ensuring that the interior maintains visibility onto the street.

The activity paths located to the east and west of the new building strengthen the connection to and from the sports field. These paths are extensions of city streets and help to create a front facing the sports field. The design of the outdoor environment recaptures some of Maserhallen’s original ‘house in a park’ character, incorporating greenery along Masergatan. This follows the existing structure of green spaces and parking areas, bordered by trees and plantings.

The concrete walls currently found in Maserhallen’s outdoor environment are being reused as design features in the fixed furnishings of the new outdoor spaces. Playful details in the façade and ground design create an environment that encourages movement. The character of Masergatan will change with the construction of a new police station, making it feel more like a city street. Thus, Maserhallen and the new sports hall will become more closely integrated with the city.
