White Arkitekter proposes striking timber frame building for Sonnenberg indoor swimming pool competition

White Arkitekter and LBGO’s proposal for the new Sonnenberg indoor swimming pool in Stuttgart presented a compact, timber-based structure with a strong architectural identity and a clear focus on sustainability and user experience.

Set on the southern edge of a residential area, the scheme was shaped around the idea of swimming in the green — integrating generous daylight, views of the surrounding trees and natural materials. The design combines a sculptural roofscape with a wave-like contour that playfully references the theme of water, with a calm, light-blue timber façade.

The new building follows the footprint of the existing pool, preserving the valuable trees of the park-like site. A carefully modelled forecourt and green outdoor areas were conceived to strengthen the social and ecological character of the site, while a renewable energy concept based on geothermal sources and PVT collectors aimed to make the building entirely fossil-free.

Although the proposal was not selected this time, the project reflects our ongoing commitment to creating sustainable, human-centred public architecture that unites climate responsibility with architectural clarity.
