White Arkitekter at Creative Industries Business Summit in Zambia

Last week, White Arkitekter’s Viktoria Walldin and Robert Schmitz took part in the Creative Industries Business Zambia Summit in Lusaka – an international gathering focused on the intersection of culture, creativity and sustainable development.

Invited by the Swedish Embassy in Lusaka, Viktoria and Robert joined a diverse programme of events including roundtable discussions at State House, panel talks, university visits, and live interviews on some of Zambia’s most influential radio stations. With a shared focus on architecture, culture and social sustainability, they brought Nordic perspectives to the table while engaging with Zambian institutions, students, and cultural leaders.

A key reason for White Arkitekter’s participation was the strong interest in two of the practice’s recent cultural projects: Sara Cultural Centre in Sweden and The New GoDown Arts Centre in Kenya. Both exemplify how architecture can support sustainable, inclusive and locally rooted cultural development. Sara Kulturhus – one of the world’s tallest timber buildings – has become an international symbol of climate-smart design and multifunctional cultural infrastructure.

The New GoDown, developed in close collaboration with local partners, is a major new cultural hub in Nairobi that was awarded in the “Future Project – Culture” category at the World Architecture Festival 2019.

As Zambia explores the potential of building a cultural centre of its own, the visit included a site tour of the proposed location in Lusaka – a project still dependent on future funding. Together, Sara and The GoDown served as valuable references in conversations about how architecture can enable artistic expression, civic identity and long-term urban resilience.

The visit opened with a high-level courtesy call at State House together with the Swedish Ambassador and representatives from Zambia’s Ministry of Youth, Sports and Arts. Throughout the week, Viktoria and Robert contributed to conversations about the role of architecture in creating resilient, inclusive and inspiring spaces – from future plans for a cultural centre in Lusaka to dialogues with the Zambian Association of Architects.

One highlight was a workshop with students at a private university – a moment of knowledge sharing and inspiration for Zambia’s next generation of architects and designers.

Being part of this summit allowed us to not only present our work on sustainable and socially driven architecture, but also to learn from Zambian practitioners and visionaries. There is so much creativity and ambition here – it feels like the beginning of something bigger.

The summit was organised in close collaboration with Sweden’s Embassy in Lusaka and forms part of a broader effort to strengthen cultural and creative exchange between Sweden and Zambia.
