Two nominations for White Arkitekter at the EHD Awards 2025

We are pleased to announce that the Lidingödoktorn’s Health Centre and the Reuben Young People’s Centre at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital are shortlisted for the European Healthcare Design Awards. The winners will be presented at the European Healthcare Design Congress in London on June 10.

The European Healthcare Design Awards is one of the most prestigious architecture awards for healthcare architecture. The Reuben Young People’s Centre is nominated in the Interior Design and the Arts category and the transformation project Lidingödoktorn’s Health Centre in the Design for Adaption and Transformation category.

We are proud that these two transformation projects have been nominated for this distinguished award. Both stand as compelling examples of how architecture can shape the future of sustainable healthcare – and we hope they will serve as inspiration for others working to create inclusive, resilient and forward-looking care environments.

The Reuben Young People’s Centre at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital

We were proud to lead the transformation of The Reuben Young People’s Centre at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital — a 26-bed inpatient ward for paediatric and adolescent patients. Working in close collaboration with CW+ and the hospital’s clinical teams, our aim was to create a space that felt radically different from the typical hospital environment: calm, comforting, and emotionally supportive for every young person who passes through its doors.

We’re very happy that such an important project is getting recognised at the EHD Awards. Young people often face heightened anxiety and distress in hospital settings, so the philosophy behind the work was to create a space that feels less like a hospital and more like a place of comfort and healing. Every design choice was made with patients’ wellbeing in mind.

Research shows that the physical environment plays a key role in the experience and recovery of young people in hospital. So, we focused on design that would reduce stress, offer familiarity, and create a sense of place. Gone are the clinical white walls; in their place are natural materials, soft textures, biophilic elements and warm, earthy colours — all designed to support wellbeing.

Art was central to the design. CW+ commissioned artists Sas & Yosh and Jo Peel to develop bespoke murals, wayfinding, and lightboxes. Inspired by the views of London from the ward’s fourth-floor windows, the artwork connects the interior to the world outside, weaving in local landmarks to help patients feel grounded and connected.

This project is a celebration of collaboration — between architects, artists, clinicians, and young people themselves. Together, we’ve created a space that supports healing, fosters comfort, and reflects the lives of the people who use it.

Lidingödoktorn’s Health Centre

When Lidingödoktorn’s Health Centre needed to relocate, the journey led to the historic AGA factory in Dalénum on Lidingö – a site that holds a significant place in the area’s identity and once played a central role in Sweden’s industrial development.

The former industrial district has undergone a major transformation, where several of the original factory buildings have been preserved, renovated and filled with new functions. Today, Dalénum is a vibrant hub for housing, workplaces and public services.

As Lidingödoktorn moved into its new premises, we were entrusted with the role of interior architect and lighting designer for the transformation. In close collaboration with the client, we provided guidance on interior colour schemes, lighting design and furnishings. The patient experience was the guiding principle throughout, from overall spatial strategy to the finest detail, with the aim of creating a welcoming, accessible and sustainable care environment, rooted in its historical context.

The design builds on the building’s original architectural qualities, generous ceiling heights and large industrial windows, and enhances them to create a light-filled, spacious and contemporary healthcare setting. Together with the client, we shaped a warm and harmonious environment that brings out the character of the building and adds material depth. Lighting and surface finishes were used intentionally to create a cohesive and cost-effective whole, without compromising on high standards of hygiene and accessibility.

A central ambition in the design process was to create an environment where people come first – patients, staff and relatives alike. A space that feels safe and welcoming, without evoking the typical associations of a healthcare facility – yet fully compliant with the highest standards for safety, efficiency and accessibility. We’re proud that the project has been recognised in the Transformation category at the EHD Awards.
