The Reuben Young People’s Centre, Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, London

Transformation of The Reuben Young People’s Centre at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital — a 26-bed inpatient ward for paediatric and adolescent patients. Working in close collaboration with CW+ and the hospital’s clinical teams, our aim was to create a space that felt radically different from the typical hospital environment: calm, comforting, and emotionally supportive for every young person who passes through its doors.

Creating a calm and comforting space for children and young people in hospital

From the beginning, we knew this project had to do more than look good. Research shows that the physical environment plays a key role in the experience and recovery of young people in hospital. So, we focused on design that would reduce stress, offer familiarity, and create a sense of place. Gone are the clinical white walls; in their place are natural materials, soft textures, biophilic elements and warm, earthy colours — all designed to support wellbeing.

Art was central to the design. CW+ commissioned artists Sas & Yosh and Jo Peel to develop bespoke murals, wayfinding, and lightboxes that bring vibrancy and meaning to the space. Inspired by the views of London from the ward’s fourth-floor windows, the artwork connects the interior to the world outside, weaving in local landmarks to help patients feel grounded and connected.

Throughout the process, we engaged closely with staff, the Play Team and the wider CW+ Arts in Health team to ensure the ward met the complex needs of both patients and clinicians. These conversations shaped everything from the layout and lighting to the artwork and furnishings.

Stakeholder input led to a rethinking of patient flow, with clearly defined zones that enhance privacy and efficiency — including quieter areas designed specifically for young people with additional mental health needs.

Recognising the therapeutic potential of colour, we worked closely with ‘Best For You’, a new approached to mental health care developed in consultation with young people and their families, to integrate its colour scheme and fonts into the artwork, signage and furnishings. The chosen palette promotes healing while complementing the artwork and creating visual interest without overwhelming the space.

The new environment, designed in response to the needs of young people and their families, means that our dedicated staff can care for adolescents in a best-in-class, therapeutic environment that can adapt to meet the needs of every patient, including those with significant mental health needs.

Sustainability was embedded in our approach. As a retrofit, we retained as much of the existing fabric as possible, minimising waste and reducing embodied carbon. We specified durable, low-emission materials and upgraded mechanical and electrical systems to improve energy efficiency and future adaptability.

This project is a celebration of collaboration — between architects, artists, clinicians, and young people themselves. Together, we’ve created a space that supports healing, fosters comfort, and reflects the lives of the people who use it. The Reuben Young People’s Centre now sets a new standard for paediatric environments within the Trust: welcoming, therapeutic, and thoughtfully designed from every angle.

Overall, the new environment has been carefully designed to foster a sense of safety and empowerment, helping young people feel more at ease and supported during their time on the ward. These spaces not only reduce stress but also offer a more positive, therapeutic experience for young people, whatever the reason for their admission to Chelsea and Westminster Hospital.
