The New Karolinska Solna project at Karolinska University Hospital Solna is one of Sweden’s largest ever healthcare projects; a world-class university hospital, designed to put Stockholm at the forefront of healthcare innovation. Over a decade of evidence-based research into the positive impact of daylight, natural materials, views out and use of space on patient wellbeing, have culminated in a building that wholly focuses on recovery, while consuming half the energy of equivalent hospitals. The hospital, designed by White Arkitekter and Tengbom for Skanska, was completed in 2018.
Karolinska University Hospital ranked as one of the world’s best hospitals
Yesterday, the magazine Newsweek released their annual ranking of the world’s best hospitals. The comprehensive ranking assessed over 2,400 hospitals in 30 countries, and Karolinska University Hospital in Solna ranked as number five in the world, and for the second time number one in Europe.

O-huset at Karolinska University Hospital Huddinge was commissioned 2020 with a facility for imaging, operation, and intervention procedures. The hospital welcomes 29,000 square metres of 23 new operating rooms, eight new intervention rooms and a new X-ray imaging department. The building, designed by White Arkitekter for Skanska and Locum, is located in an attractive southerly location facing the park and also houses a brand-new sterilisation unit. Additionally, the project encompasses an 8000 square metre redevelopment of the existing hospital for pre-post-op care. In 2021 the building achieved the Swedish Healthcare Design award.
Karolinska University Hospital have been ranked in the top ten of Newsweek’s yearly ranking for five straight years – with this year’s ranking at number five being the highest.

The ranking, carried out by Newsweek and global data firm Statista, is based on four data sources:
- Thousands of medical experts (doctors, hospitals managers, health care professionals) in 30 countries were invited to participate in the online survey.
- Results from patient experience surveys. Publicly available data from existing patient surveys was used to analyze patient experience.
- Hospital quality metrics e.g., data on quality of treatment and hygiene measures.
- For the first time, a PROMs implementation score has been included in the scoring model of the World’s Best Hospitals project. PROMs are defined as standardized, validated questionnaires completed by patients to measure their perception of their functional well-being and quality of life.
