Skåne University Hospital Campus – Healthcare Buildings shortlisted for the EHD Awards

We are pleased to share that Skåne University Hospital Campus – Healthcare Buildings known as NSM has been shortlisted for the European Healthcare Design Awards 2026, one of the world’s most prestigious awards in healthcare architecture. The winners will be announced at the European Healthcare Design Congress in London on 16 June.

The European Healthcare Design (EHD) Awards recognise environments that support health and wellness, embed quality improvement and support the delivery of treatment and care in an accessible, sustainable and equitable way. NSM has been shortlisted in the category Excellence in Healthcare Planning.

Thanks to the strong commitment of Region Skåne, we have been able to create a healthcare environment of the highest standard, designed to prioritise human-centred care. Being shortlisted for the EHD Awards is a meaningful acknowledgement of the shared effort and the level of ambition that has shaped the project from start to finish.
Paula Block Philipsen, Lead Architect, White Arkitekter

NSM is one of Sweden’s largest hospital projects, completed last year after ten years of development. Commissioned by Region Skåne, we designed two new buildings with a total area of 110,000 square metres. Located close to the city centre, the project combines refurbishment and new construction to integrate the hospital area more naturally into the urban fabric – an important step towards more equitable access to care. At street level, the new buildings are designed to feel open and welcoming, with new routes and public ground-floor spaces contributing to a more active and inclusive city environment.

Everyone involved in NSM has been motivated by the understanding that hospitals are among the most essential shared functions in society. It has been both inspiring and rewarding to be part of a collaboration defined by strong commitment, high ambitions and a shared sense of purpose.
Kjell Nyberg, Lead Architect, White Arkitekter

The two new buildings accommodate patient rooms, operating theatres and a fully automated, state-of-the-art sterilisation centre. The design is informed by the latest research on the impact of spatial environments on patient wellbeing and has been developed through an evidence-based approach in close collaboration with hospital staff. To support the ongoing development of healthcare, the layout of rooms and departments allows for future adaptations while ensuring efficient care flows over time.

Inside, the buildings are characterised by the use of timber, calm and restorative environments, and generous views across the city, the park and surrounding landscape. The hospital’s green setting – with around 80 tree species and more than 700 trees – has been a key starting point for the design. This connection to nature is further reinforced through façades featuring both vertical and horizontal greenery.
