KTH Main Building – Interior design

KTH Main Building – Interior design

The Main Building is one of the iconic landmarks of the KTH campus – a time capsule with over a century of history embedded in its walls. Through a careful process that respected the building’s cultural and historical significance, and through extensive dialogue with its users, we have created a welcoming and inspiring learning environment. While steeped in history, the spaces now meet contemporary needs in both function and design.

Historical context with contemporary function

Since its inauguration over a hundred years ago, KTH’s main building has served as a centre for education and learning. This role remains unchanged, but the spaces have undergone a comprehensive yet sensitive renovation to adapt to the evolving needs of its users.

The renovation has improved functionality, technology, acoustics and lighting, bringing the building into line with modern teaching practices. This complex process, which required close collaboration across disciplines and with KTH, has further enhanced the value of the building for the university and its community.

An inspiring learning environment that bridges historical context with contemporary function and expression.

The project began with extensive user analysis and dialogue to establish the needs and vision for both the building and its activities. This collaborative groundwork informed the design manual we developed establishing a shared strategy and vision for the project. The aim was to add a contemporary layer that would harmonise seamlessly with the historic character of the building.

Great care was taken in the selection of materials and technical solutions. The original character of the spaces has been preserved and enhanced with a subdued colour palette that reflects the whitewashed plaster walls while incorporating the vibrant hues introduced in the 1990s. We focused on a carefully curated selection of materials that matched the quality and stature of those in the original building, and the furnishings convey a sense of purpose, quality, sustainability and longevity.

The project placed a strong emphasis on functionality, flexibility and intelligent solutions that are intuitive to use. Previously, the building had many underutilised or unused spaces. To support efficient and sustainable use of the space, we introduced flexible and well-designed furniture that increased space capacity and added more study areas in the common areas. The atriums were also redesigned for versatility and now serve as study environments as well as event spaces for socialising, lectures and celebrations.

The common study areas play an important role in creating spaces where students can meet, study and socialise. These areas have been upgraded with refreshed finishes and improved acoustics. Much of the furniture has been custom-designed in oak, with colour inspiration for the chairs and details taken from preserved wall and ceiling paintings by Hilding Linnqvist.

Long-term sustainability has been a guiding principle throughout the project. Every decision reflects a commitment to enduring quality and longevity. Much of the existing furniture was reused elsewhere on the KTH campus, and the choice of new materials was driven by ecological considerations. Given the heavy wear and tear in the public spaces and lecture halls, it was a natural choice to design furniture that was highly durable, repairable and refinishable. Every surface, colour, piece of furniture and product has been carefully selected to ensure timelessness and sustainability, making them economically viable in the long term.

KTH’s main building, designed by Erik Lallerstedt, is a listed building. Since its completion, the building has undergone several renovations. The most recent, in 1996, was led by Ahrbom & Partner and was awarded the ROT Prize.
