White Arkitekter nominated twice for the world’s best healthcare architecture of the past decade

When the European Healthcare Design Awards honours the best healthcare architecture of the past decade, White Arkitekter has two nominated projects: Carlanderska Hospital and Queen Silvia’s Children’s Hospital, both located in Gothenburg.

Each year, the prestigious European Healthcare Design Awards recognises the world’s leading healthcare architecture. This year, special Champions Awards will also be presented, where winners from the past ten years compete in a “champion of champions” competition for healthcare architecture.

A total of 18 projects from across the globe are nominated across six categories. White Arkitekter is one of only two firms in the world with two nominated projects.

We are incredibly proud of these nominations! Both projects are characterised by thoughtful design, where the building, interiors, art, and landscape combine to create a harmonious whole. Each time I revisit these spaces, I am especially delighted by the immense pride the staff take in their beautifully designed workplaces. This is the essence of great healthcare architecture!

Carlanderska Hospital

The extension and redevelopment of Carlanderska Hospital, undertaken for the Carlanderska Hospital Foundation, has been nominated in the Design for Adaptation and Transformation category. The extension, situated in a sensitive cultural environment, includes new facilities for surgery, radiology, as well as a public restaurant. At the same time, the surrounding park remains open to all, enhanced by an outdoor dining area adjacent to the restaurant. Through this extension, we created a clearly defined entrance plaza and realised the enclosed courtyard that was originally planned in 1917—finally brought to life a century later.

Queen Silvia’s Children’s Hospital

Commissioned by Västfastigheter and Sahlgrenska University Hospital, White Arkitekter designed the groundbreaking Queen Silvia’s Children’s Hospital, which is nominated in the Interior Design and the Arts category. Playfulness is integrated throughout the building, as play is central to children’s development. The child’s perspective and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child played a vital role in the planning process. Even amidst illness or disability, healthy play must always be encouraged as a professional tool for recovery. The environment and artwork in the hospital foster meaningful activities, encourage movement and exploration in children, and promote both well-being and recovery.

Environments that people do not choose to visit but instead find themselves in require extra care in their design. A children’s hospital is one of the most important examples of this. We are incredibly proud of this nomination, as healing environments like these are essential.
