White Arkitekter wins fourth prize with innovative sports hall proposal

We are happy to share that we were awarded fourth prize in the architecture competition for a new sports hall in Horb am Neckar in Germany. Our proposal is a shared space that combines sports and other activities for a wide range of users, active throughout the day and rooted in the life of the town.

As a meeting place across generations, it is a shared civic space for schools, clubs and the wider community which supports both sporting activity and social exchange.

Shaped by the site’s steep topography, the building is carefully embedded into the hillside. Its organisation, entrances and circulation all follow the natural terrain, creating a clear and intuitive layout. Horizontal layers form terraces and outdoor spaces, while the building’s low profile helps preserve important views towards the Neckar.

Transparent façades connect the activity inside with the public realm, making sport visible and inviting. An upper-level entrance from the town leads to spectator seating and outdoor athletics facilities, while a sheltered roof terrace – conceived as a “city balcony” – offers space for gatherings and events.

Built primarily in timber, the hall combines durability with a warm and welcoming character. Together with its surrounding landscape, it forms a robust and flexible setting for sport, community and future development.

The proposal was designed together with the landscape architects at Pfrommer + Roeder.
