La Défense’s objective is to become the world’s first large-scale post-carbon neighborhood. In 2021, the goal to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions with 50% by 2030 was set, compared to France’s national target with 40%. The Empreintes Call for Innovative Urban Projects concerns the transformation of five lots located at the boundary between the business district and the neighbouring cities of Puteaux and Courbevoie. Overarching themes include technical innovation, longevity, environmental excellence, and contribution to local life.
The call was open for French and international participants and the four teams qualified for phase 2 were selected for the quality of their realized projects, the relevance of their competencies, their understanding of the sites and their adherence to ambitions of the call for projects.
