Two nominations for White Arkitekter in Dezeen Awards 2023

We are proud to be shortlisted in two categories for the Dezeen Awards 2023. White Arkitekter is one of the finalists in the “Architect of the year” category and the stormwater pond at Exercisfältet in Uppsala is nominated in the “Mixed-use” category. The winners will be announced in November.

As one of five architectural practices, we have the chance to win the Dezeen Awards Architect of the Year 2023, a category that recognises the best emerging and established players in architecture and recognises architectural practices whose work has had a significant impact on the industry. The nominees have been selected by the Dezeen Awards jury and the Dezeen editorial team.

We are delighted to be nominated for this prestigious award. We want to make a difference to society through architecture and design and promote sustainable change. Every project we are involved in is a result of collaboration with clients, contractors and partners.
Alexandra Hagen, CEO, White Arkitekter

– Our role is to support our clients in raising the bar for long-term sustainable architecture. I see this nomination not only as a recognition for us but also as a tribute to courageous collaborations and our clients, continues Alexandra Hagen.

In recent years, our international presence has increased, and we now have employees in Sweden, Norway, the UK, Germany, Canada and East Africa. In addition to this international expansion, several of our projects have been recognised in Sweden and internationally. One of them is Sara Cultural Centre, which is nominated for the Mies van der Rohe Awards 2024 and has been recognised as an international beacon of sustainable design. In May the 18th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia opened, where we were invited by curator Lesley Lokko to exhibit at the main exhibition The Laboratory of the Future. Through our exhibition “One Hundred and Fifty Thousand Trees” we ask whether it is possible to find a balance between the forest as a resource and the urgent need to preserve and rebuild fragile ecosystems.

Stormwater pond can win award in mixed-use category
The stormwater pond at Exercisfältet in Uppsala is one of six projects from around the world shortlisted in the Dezeen Awards’ Mixed-use category. The dam purifies stormwater and protects against flooding, while being thoughtfully designed to be a place where people can socialise and go for a stroll.

It's great that our work is being recognised in this way. It is proof that we have achieved world-class design of what is basically a technical facility of a type that rarely receives such care.
Charlotta Råsmark, lead landscape architect, White Arkitekter

The southern city of Uppsala is growing and densifying around Exercisfältet, a former military training field with cultural-historical values. This leads to an increased need for both treat and detain stormwater.

The stormwater pond at the Exercisfältet in Uppsala is a necessity to protect nature from the city’s polluted water and to protect the urban area from flooding due to reduced infiltration and climate change. With thoughtful design, the pond has also become a popular place to rest and socialise, contributing to biodiversity.

The dam is a good example of what landscape architecture will focus on in the future: combining new technical requirements due to climate change with solutions that promote biodiversity, while creating places for people to appreciate and enjoy.

The Dezeen Awards recognise the world’s best architecture, interiors and design. Now in its sixth year, the award has become a coveted honour for architects and designers around the world. This year, over 4800 projects from 94 countries were submitted to the competition.
