The stormwater pond at Exercisfältet can win ArchDaily Building of the Year Awards

The pond at Exercisfältet in Uppsala purifies stormwater and protects the city from flooding while being designed to contribute to biodiversity and be a place for people. Now it has a chance to win the ArchDaily Building of the Year Awards in the Public & Landscape Architecture category.

For the 15th year in a row, the influential architecture website ArchDaily is presenting the ArchDaily Building of the Year Awards to recognise and reward projects that make an impact in the profession. The votes are now open, and the winners will be announced later this month.

We are delighted that the stormwater pond at the Exercisfältet is being recognised in this context. By combining new technical requirements resulting from climate change with solutions that promote biodiversity, while being carefully designed to attract people, the dam is a project that meets several of the challenges facing the planet.

Around the pond there are places and paths that invite visitors to move along the water’s edge and sit down on one of the south-facing seats overlooking the field. The vegetation is adapted to the site’s natural conditions and consists of a combination of species that are both hardy and have water purifying properties. The different parts of the stormwater pond flood with different amounts of rainfall and have great potential to develop into a good habitat for many different animals and plants.

The relationship between people and nature is a crucial issue for the future, and the pond reflects what landscape architecture needs to focus on in the future. Designing places for everyday contact with nature benefits both people and the planet on many levels. It is therefore very gratifying to see how well people in Uppsala have welcomed the stormwater pond.

The winners of ArchDaily Building of the Year 2024 will be announced on 22 February.
