Södra Älvsborg hospital wins Best International Healthcare Development

The psychiatric clinic at Södra Älvsborg hospital was inaugurated in October last year. The goal was to design Sweden’s best psychiatry with the dignity of a public building, yet without the feeling of a closed institutional facility. The clinic is now, once again, being recognised internationally for its design.

Södra Älvsborg hospital’s psychiatric clinic has been named Best International Healthcare Development 2021 at the Better Healthcare Awards. Our specialists in healing architecture are behind the architecture and interiors of the new buildings at Borås hospital area. The buildings are part of an investment in the development of psychiatric care at Södra Älvsborgs hospital and accommodate wards for round-the-clock care, outpatient care, and training facilities.

We’re very proud that this project has received a new, important international award. After being awarded as highly commended at the EHD awards earlier this year, it feels great to follow up with a win at the prestigious Better Healthcare Awards.

– We are especially thankful that the winner is a mental health facility – an area of healthcare design that really needs to be talked about more, says Cristiana Caira.

For some time now, there has been a healthy questioning of traditional care environments. And in this project, the destigmatisation of psychiatric care and its patients has been a key component of the team’s work, which has been guided by the fact that attractive environments encourage consideration for the premises and the people who use them. By adopting a humanist design approach that encourages interaction with nature, the clinic provides a safe haven for patient recovery, relatives and staff alike.
