Celebrating exemplary architecture, innovative care environments and well-executed processes, Vårdbyggnadspriset recognises standout projects across the sector. In the category Rum för öppen vård och omsorg (Spaces for Outpatient Care and Social Services), the Paediatric and Adolescent Medicine Outpatient Clinic at Skåne University Hospital Malmö has been named this year’s winner. With the ambition to create a calm, undramatic encounter between young patients and healthcare staff, we worked closely with Region Skåne and PEAB to shape bright, warm and welcoming spaces within a 1960s building.
Paediatric and Adolescent Medicine Outpatient Clinic wins Vårdbyggnadspriset
“A typical project – a refurbishment – carried out with exceptional skill and now standing as a shining example for the many future redevelopment projects across Sweden.” With these words, the jury honours the Paediatric and Adolescent Medicine Outpatient Clinic at Skåne University Hospital in Malmö (BUM), named the winner of Vårdbyggnadspriset 2025 (Swedish Healthcare Building Award). The prize was presented at Forum Vårdbyggnad’s autumn conference.

The refurbishment has significantly elevated the environment, offering better conditions for staff to carry out their vital work and providing a soothing atmosphere for patients. The design is based on a thorough analysis of the existing structure and operational needs, distilled into a clear concept that guided the project through to completion.
Throughout the process, we collaborated with an expert group of children with experience of healthcare, whose insights played a decisive role. Their wishes are reflected in playful elements including floor-level light projections, detailed wall illustrations and small characters placed on doors.

Despite the building’s modest ceiling height, a generous spatial feel has been achieved through carefully considered details such as full-height door frames, new low-sill windows, and walls and floors in playful tones. The interior is defined by timber elements that create a warm and welcoming atmosphere, and artwork by Coco Moodysson plays a central role in enriching the new setting. Much of the furniture has been reused. By opening the façade with large windows, daylight is reflected deep into the building’s once-dark core, where the waiting areas are located. Here, young patients are welcomed into a reassuring environment in which encounters between children and caregivers can unfold with ease.

A healthcare environment shaped from a strong central idea – executed with clarity and conviction – welcomes both the young and old alike. Despite the constraints of an existing structure, norms and assumptions have been questioned, paving the way for a thoughtful transformation.
