Monica von Schmalensee appointed ‘Mayor’s Design Advocate’ by Mayor of London

In September 2017, Monica will join a group of individuals that represent the highest quality of talent and expertise in the fields of architecture and the built environment. The Mayor’s Design Advocates will be called upon to support the Mayor and his staff in the delivery of the Good Growth by Design agenda, through advocacy, critique and research.

I am delighted to welcome my talented team of Design Advocates who will be working with me to realise my vision for London as an inclusive city where growth brings benefits to communities.  I am proud to have a team around me that is as diverse as the city it will serve. Together, we’ll shape a London where everyone has the chance to live and work in sustainable, well-designed, and inclusive places.
Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London

Monica is well-suited to advise on the interplay between society and place, having delivered the 40,000 seat Tele2 arena and created a new neighbourhood in Stockholm. Her approach to architectural design focuses on three essential criteria: sustainability, longevity and community; promoting change in society and enhancing wellbeing through design.

In a political climate where public responsibility is declining, we need, more than ever, to provide public space that strengthens democracy and that is characterised by accessibility and community-building activities. Public space is a foundation for democracy, as well as health and wellbeing, and I would like to further expand the ambition to not just make sure that all Londoners have access to these qualities, but that they should be an integral part of everyday life.
