Lumi finalist in the Sweden Green Building Awards

The office building Lumi in Uppsala is one of two finalists in the Building of the Year – LEED category at the Sweden Green Building Awards (SGBC). Scoring an impressive 99 out of 110 possible points under the LEED certification system, Lumi has achieved the highest score in Europe and is currently the world’s top-rated office building, as recognised by the SGBC.

Lumi stands as one of Sweden’s most ambitious reuse projects – a large-scale testbed for circular architecture. In this unique project, the concrete frame of a 1970s building has been extended and re-clad, while nearly everything practically possible has been reused – from plasterboards, bricks and doors to radiators and electrical boxes. The result is a contemporary laboratory and office building with exceptionally low climate impact.

The project is certified under LEED v4 BD+C Core and Shell, where the threshold for the highest level, Platinum, is 80 points. With 99 out of 110, Lumi is not only the highest-scoring project in Europe but also the world’s highest-rated office building.

We’re very pleased to once again be among the finalists in the SGB Awards. Together with our skilled collaborators and a courageous client, Lumi demonstrates that large-scale reuse can deliver both architectural quality and significant environmental benefits.

The Sweden Green Building Awards is the country’s most prestigious recognition in sustainable construction, celebrating pioneering projects and individuals in the built environment who inspire and lead the way towards a more sustainable future.

With Lumi, it could be the third time in four years that an Uppsala office building designed by White Arkitekter for Vasakronan wins the award. In both 2022 and 2023, the office buildings Celsius and Magasin X – also designed by White for Vasakronan – took home the same category.

The winner will be announced on 27 November at the Building Sustainability Conference 2025 in Stockholm.
