“A Heart of Wood” on tour in Prague

The exhibition of our pioneering project Sara Cultural Centre has reached a new destination in a new country. A Heart of Wood, that premiered at Aedes in Berlin last year, lives on. Today, it opens at Jaroslav Fragner Gallery in Prague.

The vernissage took place yesterday with a lecture by Oskar Norelius and Robert Schmitz, the Lead Architects and the Exhibition Architect Filip Sudolsky. Today, it opens to the public and the exhibition presents the development of the 20-storey cultural centre from competition through production to the final result.

A Heart of Wood is organised in collaboration with Aedes Architecture Forum in Berlin and will take place under the auspices of the ambassador of Sweden to the Czech Republic. The exhibition at Jaroslav Fragner Gallery not only offers an insight into the innovative construction process, but also presents many forms of use of this giant timber building.

Sara Cultural Centre is setting new standards. Impressive and innovative is not only its architecture, but also the programme and goals which were defined by the municipality and citizens in close collaboration with White Arkitekter.
Kristin Feireiss and Hans-Jürgen Commerell of the Aedes Architecture Forum in Berlin

The main goal when designing Sara Cultural Centre was to point out the possibilities of using wood as a construction material for complex high-rise buildings in sustainable construction. The diverse program required a number of innovative design solutions to incorporate a variety of requirements, from flexibility through acoustics to overall statics. The architectural design allowed the load-bearing structure to be created without concrete, which significantly reduced the carbon footprint of this carbon negative building.

By constructing one of the world’s tallest timber buildings in Skellefteå, White Arkitekter “moved a mountain”, a symbol showing that change is possible – through architecture!

The exhibition runs at Galerie Jaroslav Fragner in Prague, Czechia, until 13 March.
