A circular campus for craft and learning

HPP Architekten and White Arkitekter’s proposal for a new vocational education and technology centre in Neustadt an der Weinstraße explores how architecture can support both learning and exchange within the crafts sector. Although the proposal was not selected, we are proud to share an innovative concept centred on interaction, adaptability, and a close relationship to the surrounding landscape.

The building is conceived as a confident marker at the eastern entrance to the city. Positioned towards the eastern edge of the site, it leaves a large, unbuilt area to the west open for future development. Its form is defined by two interlocking circular volumes, organising the programme into distinct yet connected zones.

At the core lies a quieter, inward-facing ring containing classrooms, administration, and circulation. This more introverted structure contrasts with the outer ring, where large-scale workshops are arranged across two levels. Here, openness and visibility support the outward-facing character of practical training, offering both functional efficiency and a clear identity towards the city.

The building is designed as a modular timber structure, prioritising prefabrication and efficient construction. Material choices focus on durability and predominantly bio-based components. Circular construction principles guide the structural concept, with timber elements designed for disassembly and reuse, complemented by concrete only where required – for foundations, cores, and fire protection. This approach contributes to a reduced carbon footprint while supporting long-term adaptability.

The surrounding landscape extends the architectural concept. To the west, a small woodland of native species is introduced, while water landscapes to the north manage stormwater and enhance biodiversity. Orchards and pollinator-friendly planting are inspired by the region’s agricultural traditions. Rainwater collected on the roofs is reused on site, with excess directed to retention areas that also function as habitats for birds and insects.

A new pedestrian and cycle route connects the site along an east–west axis, linking nearby districts and transport nodes. Within the courtyard, gently modelled terrain and diverse planting create a calm, protected environment that can also support outdoor teaching.
