White Arkitekter’s sustainable design of both housing and public spaces will make the estate regeneration scheme one of the greenest in the borough. Client Be First, the Council’s regeneration company, expects the development to set new environmental standards.
Planning achieved for 500 new homes at Gascoigne East, London
Barking and Dagenham Council has approved the plans to build over 500 sustainable and tenure blind homes on the Gascoigne East estate in Barking, London.
The development features 526 modular Scandinavian-style family apartments and private homes with communal gardens spread across 11 new buildings, 65% if which will be affordable rent or shared ownership and 35% for private sale. White’s goal has been to create a new residential neighbourhood with focus on the public realm including tree-lined public spaces and an entirely new 5,000 sqm park featuring public art.
This landmark development will be the borough’s most ambitious and greenest ever and will be a template for environmentally-friendly living for the 21st century

Over 1,000 cycle parking spaces are planned for the estate to encourage active travel. Residents will also be able to live a greener life thanks to rooftop photo-voltaic cells and connection to the district heating system. The energy savings are expected to be 40% of CO2 emissions against the Building Regulations.
The first residents are expected to move in during 2021.
