An important part of the City of Stockholm’s plans for 160,000 new homes by 2030, the Södra Skanstull masterplan will link different neighbourhoods in a natural way; erasing the boundaries between the inner and outer urban neighbourhoods to create a more accessible, walkable city for all. Developed in collaboration between White Arkitekter and the City of Stockholm, the masterplan provides solutions for a complex urban area, raising the development potential for 750 new homes as well as offices, hotels, culture and sports facilities to enhance the liveability of this unique Södermalm district.
2017 Planpriset win for Södra Skanstull masterplan
The 2017 Planpriset has been awarded to the City of Stockholm for the Södra Skanstull masterplan for its dynamic contribution to the urban environment. This is the highest accolade bestowed by Sveriges Arkitekter for transformative work in the public realm.
Södra Skanstull aims for a safe and well-connected city neighbourhood that encourages pedestrian and cycle mobility and interaction with nature. Thanks to dialogue with people living and working in the area, the plan builds on Skanstull’s rich community life, which ranges from urban farming, boat and sport activities, as well as cultural and club life. The masterplan also improves citizen accessibility to green space and sporting amenity.
Planpriset is awarded by Sveriges Arkitekter to stimulate and disseminate good examples of Swedish urban planning and development. The prize is awarded to a municipality for well-executed planning work that addresses an urgent issue; in this instance, an exemplar urban densification strategy that promotes equity in the built environment.
