Lumi wins UK award

We are delighted to share that our project Lumi has received an award at the UK Life Sciences, Tech and Research Clusters Awards, winning the category Best Retrofit & Reuse Building – Campus & Estate Transformation. Designed by us for Vasakronan, Lumi has attracted international attention for its combination of architectural quality, pioneering reuse and ambitious sustainability goals.

The Life Sciences, Tech & Research Clusters Conference and Awards is organised by the British publications Construction News and Property Week. The award, which recognises outstanding projects within the life sciences sector, was presented at a ceremony in London last night.

We are proud to see Lumi recognised on an international stage. The award demonstrates that reuse and sustainability can go hand in hand with the high standards required for contemporary life science environments.

The 22,000-square-metre laboratory and office building is one of Sweden’s most ambitious reuse projects. Lumi achieved 99 out of 110 possible points in the LEED certification system, making it the highest-scoring project in Europe and the highest-scoring office building in the world.

The concrete structure of the original 1970s building has been extended and re-clad, while nearly everything practically possible has been reused – from plasterboards, bricks and doors to radiators and electrical boxes.  The result is a contemporary laboratory and office building with exceptionally low climate impact.

Creating state-of-the-art life science environments within the framework of an existing building required both ingenuity and close collaboration.

Digital tools played a key role throughout the project. Every part of the existing building was carefully surveyed and catalogued in a database before the new building was modelled in detail. The BIM model is so comprehensive that it serves as the project’s sole construction documentation, making the project entirely drawing-free. It also enabled continuous climate assessments throughout the design and construction process, helping the team achieve its ambitious sustainability targets.
