The planting design follows a nature-inspired approach, both technically and visually. Trees are positioned in both paved surfaces and open planting beds, interwoven with free-growing shrubs that form clearings and spatial sequences. Perennials, meadow species and bulbs weave between them, reinforcing the character of the square with a flowering scheme that mirrors the sky – a key element of Slussen’s overarching planting concept.
Green life takes root at Södermalmstorg
Today marks the next significant step in the transformation of Slussen – as Södermalmstorg finally receives its long-awaited greenery. A total of 28 trees representing eight different species will be planted, accompanied by shrubs, perennials, meadow plants and bulbs that together establish a species-rich, seasonally shifting landscape at the heart of Stockholm.
With the trees now being introduced, a new dimension is woven into Södermalmstorg. The square’s generous public realm gains shade, variation and life, becoming an even more welcoming place for Stockholmers.

A new living room for the city
The new planting does more than offer a beautiful setting for everyday encounters and moments of pause – it contributes cooling, resilience and ecological value, while also enhancing the square’s ability to withstand the effects of climate change. Plant species have been carefully selected to combine visual quality with the capacity to thrive in the demanding conditions of the inner city – both today and in a changing future climate. Through considered design, Södermalmstorg becomes a new living room for the city, where urban life and greenery meet.
The plantings form an essential part of the blue-green Slussen, where squares, terraces and green roofs together create new ecological habitats and green urban rooms for people and wildlife alike, right in the centre of the city.
