Kvarter 7 – the starting point for the unique Stockholm Wood City

The construction of Stockholm Wood City in Sickla is underway. First up is Kvarter 7 on Nobelberget, which we have designed on behalf of Atrium Ljungberg, which is the driving force behind the project. Yesterday, selected Swedish and international journalists were given an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour at the construction site and learned more about the neighbourhood, set to become an international showcase for sustainable construction.

Situated in a secluded, car-free location atop Nobelberget in Sickla, Kvarter 7 marks the launch of the much-publicised Stockholm Wood City. The block comprises three residential buildings with solid wood frames and wooden facades, featuring 80 apartments with a total gross floor area of approximately 8,900 square metres.

– With Stockholm Wood City, Atrium Ljungberg is leading the way in sustainable urban development and architecture, where wood plays a key role, say Charlotta Wallander and Karolina Mellberg, architects at White.

In Kvarter 7, our expertise in wood architecture and design has come to the forefront and we are proud to contribute, together with our client, to a human-centered and sustainable residential block that marks the start of the world's largest urban wooden construction project.

The houses have been designed to take full advantage of the site’s natural features. According to the detailed development plan, the facades and roof angles must vary between each stairwell, which creates a distinctive character while breaking down the scale of the block. The varying paneling and colors between the stairwells in combination with pitched roofs create a welcoming and inviting environment while forming a cohesive whole.

A child-centered perspective has been a guiding principle throughout the project. In addition to essential features such as circulation routes and views of the courtyard, the homes offer slightly larger children’s rooms and practical utility spaces with ample storage, drying cabinets, and cupboards for helmets, rain gear, and boots. The block’s secluded location and varied topography also provide a stimulating and safe play environment for children.
