Cristiana Caira at White Arkitekter wins Italy’s top award for healthcare architecture

A pioneering hospital where space for play and the child’s perspective is constant throughout the building. This is part of the jury’s motivation for the prestigious architecture prize awarded to White Arkitekter’s Cristiana Caira for the Queen Silvia Children’s Hospital project. The award is Italy’s top prize in healthcare architecture and is awarded by the Centro Nazionale per l’Edilizia e la Tecnica Ospedaliera, Italy’s national centre for healthcare construction and technology.

CNETO brings together professionals involved in healthcare facility design and builds and disseminates knowledge about healthcare facilities across industries and contexts. To recognise significant contributions to the industry, CNETO presents annual awards to individuals who have made a valuable contribution to the design and implementation of hospital and healthcare systems. Cristiana Caira and White Arkitekter’s team won the award for Queen Silvia Children’s Hospital’s application of design solutions and sustainability strategies, which clearly reflect CNETO’s mission and purpose.

Thank you Cneto for this new prestigious Award to Queen Silvia Children’s Hospital. In 25 years of professional life, this project has a very special place in my hearth. I am proud and immensely thankful, to have been part of a project whose mission is to enable a healthier life for our children, our future.

– I dedicate the prize to all heroes at White,Sahlgrenska University Hospital, Västfastigheter, NCC and many more, that put years of immeasurable engagement to deliver one of the world’s best children’s hospitals, contiues Cristiana Caira.

The 2023 award ceremony took place during the CNETO conference in Camogli on Sunday. The award was presented by the new Director General for Planning at the Ministry of Health, Americo Cicchetti. The artist Danilo Trogu was also present and handed over a sculpture to the winners.

The jury’s motivation

We want in particular to congratulate to Cristiana Caira and White Arkitekter for the CNETO Award – BEST PROJECT – 2023, with the following motivation:

The winning project is the Queen Silvia Children’s hospital, developed by the White Arkitekter design team coordinated by the arch. Cristiana Caira. In fact, on behalf of Västfastigheter, White Arkitekter designed a pioneering hospital: in the project, the space for play is constant throughout the building and the identification with the child’s perspectives, as it was possible to observe during the last CNETO tour, played an essential role in the planning and design process.

The current hospital campus, where the pediatric hospital is located, is characterized by healthcare architectures built in the 1970s, and the new intervention stands out for its innovation. It corresponds to the first step which will involve the renewal of the entire medical campus in Gothenburg, with the reorganization of accesses, flows and routes that will respond to future needs.

The winning project is fully responds to the activities carried out and promoted by CNETO for the design solutions and sustainability strategies adopted by the project team.
