Färnebofjärden National Park – Entrances

A small number of restrained yet distinctive elements recur across all four entrance sites. A robust entrance sign provides visibility from approach roads, clearly signalling arrival and guiding visitors onwards. A timber screen forms the principal architectural gesture, sturdy and characterful, yet deliberately understated. In certain locations it is paired with shelters, information boards and other elements shaped by the needs of the specific site.

Shelters, storage buildings and toilets share a coherent architectural expression, clad in timber shingles treated with traditional tar from Dalarna. The jetties are simple and durable, with timber decking and wire-mesh balustrades. Benches and tables are crafted from planed pine in generous sections, with bases and armrests in hot-dip galvanised flat steel.

An overarching ambition has been to create a clear sense of arrival. Entrance areas are carefully separated from moving traffic and parked cars, allowing the landscape to take precedence. Functions are grouped for clarity and complemented by discreet wayfinding towards key destinations. The timber screens are articulated differently on their outer and inner faces, subtly reinforcing the experience of crossing a threshold and stepping out of the everyday into the national park.
