Stadsradhus – Umeå Townhouses

When the townhouses were built in Umeå’s most central neighbourhood, they did more than just help to make urban living better. They were also a big step towards an upgraded city centre – an oasis in the heart of Umeå.

Crowning glory

Balticgruppen initiated a significant mixed-use development within Forsete, encouraging healthy diversity through hybrid operational programming. Known as Utopia, this development is home to 60 retail units, twelve-storey hotel, six-storey commercial and office block, gym, bowling alley, sports bar and several restaurants. Stadsradhus occupies the crown of Utopia; ten owner-occupier townhouses for single or double occupancy that offer spectacular city and river views, five storeys above the ground plane of Rådhusesplanaden town square.

A sanctuary overlooking Umeå's buzzing Forsete district.

Tärnaby-based glass artist Monica Edmondson collaborated in the making of the bespoke tinted glass façade. Each townhouse has its own subtle combination of glass panels, with some etched with discreet patterns, visible only when close up. The external glass does not only serve a decorative function, but it is specifically designed for durability and low maintenance in upkeep. Timber and planted landscaping surround each entrance, providing a welcoming refuge from the throb of the city. The palette of greens used in the glass panels heightens the greenery of the landscaping to create an oasis of tranquillity.

Ten townhouses at the centre of Umeå's buzzing Forsete district with panoramic views across the city and river, each townhouse serving as an inspiration and sanctuary for this particular urban demographic.

Each townhouse has an internal area of 125sqm, with the exception of the corner house that stands at 154sqm. Intended for singles or couples, the double-height ground floor living areas are furnished with generous areas for entertaining and relaxation. There is a great deal of flexibility in the plan and due to the owner-occupier model, residents can change living space to increase the number of bedrooms, or vice versa. In addition to the ground floor guest bathroom, the upper levels contain a master bathroom accessed through a sculptural spiral staircase. All of the townhouses have access to private balconies as well as the communal outdoor gardens, to enjoy the open air and the spectacle of the city beyond.
