Sonyas Office and Cultural building, Gothenburg

Sonyas Office and Cultural building, Gothenburg

Meet Sonyas – A New Landmark for Culture and Climate in Gothenburg. At Masthuggskajen, a new kind of building is taking shape – one that combines ambitious climate goals with strong social values, and brings together workspaces and cultural life under one roof.

Our future home in Gotheburg

Sonyas will be the future home of White Arkitekter’s Gothenburg studio. Named after the beloved jazz singer and cultural icon Sonya Hedenbratt, the building is designed as a place where the city’s business and cultural communities connect – where the river meets the street, and day turns into night.

Sonyas is the result of one of Gothenburg’s most forward-looking land allocation processes, led by Älvstranden Utveckling, with high demands on sustainability, architecture and social impact. The building will host both offices and cultural venues, becoming a new public node in the city.

Client: Broods
Contractor: BRA
Location: Masthuggskajen, Gothenburg
Status: On-going

With inspiration from the historic Masthuggskajen

These high ambitions have been translated into a design that unites climate responsibility, social value and architectural quality. Sonyas’ sustainability profile is further strengthened by optimised use of materials – including reclaimed brick and slate, a timber structure sourced from more responsibly managed forests, and surplus materials from other projects. A timeless palette and finely crafted details are designed to age with dignity and stand the test of time. The architecture draws inspiration from Gothenburg’s historic buildings and expresses a materiality rooted in the character of Masthuggskajen.

Sonyas is designed to be robust, open and adaptable over time. Every material has been carefully selected – not only for its low climate impact, but to support encounters between people.
Joakim Hansson, Lead Architect

With some of the city’s toughest climate criteria, Sonyas is set to become a benchmark for low-carbon urban development and sustainable cultural infrastructure. The project is developed together with Broods, who are responsible for project development and long-term management, and BRA as construction partner.

Buildings with a high level of utilisation are the most sustainable form of new development. With Sonyas, we demonstrate how shared spaces can support both working life and an accessible cultural scene. By sharing resources, we can simultaneously enhance the quality of the urban environment – socially and architecturally.
Jacob Sahlqvist, Managing director, White in Gothenburg

The team behind Broods has previously worked on forward-thinking and innovative urban development projects such as Nya Hovås, Indigo and Nodi. With Sonyas, they take things one step further in their ambition to create vibrant, sustainable neighbourhoods.

The site for Sonyas lies in Masthuggskajen – an emerging part of Gothenburg shaped by the vision of an open, mixed city where people live close together and sustainably, with strong access to public transport, cycling routes and greenery.

Sonyas will be located at the future Sänkverkstorget, a new square between the river and Masthuggstorget – set to become a key meeting point for the whole district. See you at Sonyas!

For us, urban development is about building connections. Sonyas is proof of what can happen when you approach city-making as a whole – where architecture, culture and sustainability come together to create something greater than the building itself. We approach the complexity of this project with humility, but with the strong belief that – thanks to the close collaboration with White – we’ll succeed. And when we stand there at the opening in 2027, we’ll do so with pride.
Louise Heilborn, Director of Project development at Broods
