Färnebofjärden National Park – Entrances

Färnebofjärden National Park – Entrances

Färnebofjärden National Park now has four new, inclusive entrance areas designed to deepen the experience of its dramatic natural setting. The scheme draws out the presence of the River Dalälven and the distinctive character of the landscape around Färnebofjärden, responding carefully to the particular conditions of each site.

Inclusive Gateways to a Remarkable River Landscape

The project takes a holistic approach to the entrance zones and their associated visitor facilities, from substantial shelters and viewing platforms to parking markers and wood stores. Each intervention is intended to heighten the sense of immersion in a vast and varied landscape, while making the park more legible, accessible and welcoming.

The design process has focused on revealing what is unique to this place, allowing the specific qualities of each entrance to inform its expression, while embedding the wider identity of Sweden’s national parks. White has prioritised durable, long-term solutions, both in architectural language and in the choice of materials.

Dalälven runs broad and powerful through the park, surging through rapids at Tyttbo, Gysinge and Sevedskvarn. Between these stretches, it widens into fjärds scattered with islands, inlets and wooded promontories, an extraordinary landscape that the project seeks to frame and make more present to visitors.

A small number of restrained yet distinctive elements recur across all four entrance sites. A robust entrance sign provides visibility from approach roads, clearly signalling arrival and guiding visitors onwards. A timber screen forms the principal architectural gesture, sturdy and characterful, yet deliberately understated. In certain locations it is paired with shelters, information boards and other elements shaped by the needs of the specific site.

Shelters, storage buildings and toilets share a coherent architectural expression, clad in timber shingles treated with traditional tar from Dalarna. The jetties are simple and durable, with timber decking and wire-mesh balustrades. Benches and tables are crafted from planed pine in generous sections, with bases and armrests in hot-dip galvanised flat steel.

An overarching ambition has been to create a clear sense of arrival. Entrance areas are carefully separated from moving traffic and parked cars, allowing the landscape to take precedence. Functions are grouped for clarity and complemented by discreet wayfinding towards key destinations. The timber screens are articulated differently on their outer and inner faces, subtly reinforcing the experience of crossing a threshold and stepping out of the everyday into the national park.
