The City of Konstanz in southern Germany invited entries to an architectural competition for the design of a new school, kindergarten and sports hall in the emerging Hafner district.
White Arkitekter, together with HPP Architekten, has developed a competition proposal for a new campus in Konstanz, Germany, where a school, kindergarten and sports hall are brought together in a unified structure shaped by the surrounding landscape. The proposal is based on the ambition to create an environment that combines sustainable architecture, educational needs and a clear urban logic.
The City of Konstanz in southern Germany invited entries to an architectural competition for the design of a new school, kindergarten and sports hall in the emerging Hafner district.
In our proposal, the three functions are organised as distinct building volumes connected through shared spaces such as the foyer, dining hall and movement rooms. This structure aims to provide openness, clarity and efficient daily logistics. The placement of the buildings creates a defined edge towards the city to the north, while the campus opens up towards the landscape in the south.
The school grounds are generously dimensioned, and the outdoor environments are integrated as part of the educational setting with a close relationship to nature.
Sustainability is a central premise of the proposal. The buildings are designed with timber façades and structural systems in timber or timber-hybrid solutions with a high degree of prefabrication, reducing climate impact and transport requirements.
By combining timber construction, a clear organisational structure and a strong sense of place, the proposal demonstrates how a future campus can evolve into an open and functional meeting space where learning, movement and nature come together.
Unfortunately, we did not win this time. Instead, we extend our congratulations to asp Architekten, who won the competition.
