Lumi finalist for the world’s most prestigious real estate award

The Lumi office building in Uppsala, designed by White Arkitekter for Vasakronan, is the only Swedish project selected as a finalist in the MIPIM Awards. The building is one of four finalists in the category Best Conversion Project, in what has been described as the real estate industry’s equivalent of the Palme d’Or, where projects from across the globe compete for prizes in ten categories.

Lumi in Uppsala is one of Sweden’s most ambitious reuse projects and serves as a testbed for new solutions in large-scale circular architecture. The project has attracted significant international attention for its design approach and its high level of material reuse. In a unique transformation, the concrete frame of a 1970s building has been extended and re-clad, while everything practically possible has been reused – including plasterboards, bricks, doors, radiators and electrical boxes. The result is a modern laboratory and office building with a very low climate impact.

We are very pleased with the nomination for the MIPIM Awards. It is a recognition that we have succeeded in our ambition to combine reuse, sustainability, architectural quality and long-term value for both tenants and the city.

The project is environmentally certified under LEED v4 BD+C Core and Shell, where the threshold for the highest level, Platinum, is 80 points. Lumi has achieved 99 out of 110 possible points, making it the highest-scoring project in Europe and the highest-rated office building globally.

Founded in 1991, the MIPIM Awards recognise the industry’s most sustainable and innovative projects – from individual buildings to entire districts. The jury rewards projects that strengthen the built environment, with a focus on climate impact, life-cycle perspectives, and value for both users and society. The winner will be announced on 12 March at the MIPIM Awards ceremony, held at the Palais des Festivals in Cannes, France.
