Feskekôrka wins Dezeen Awards 2025 for best heritage project

The unique and challenging restoration of Gothenburg’s fish and seafood market, Feskekôrka, has been named the winner of the prestigious Dezeen Awards 2025 in the Heritage Project category.

In close collaboration with developer and property owner Higab, collaborative contractor Skeppsviken, and building conservation specialist, we have restored and renovated the iconic building Feskekôrka. The fish and seafood market – a Gothenburg landmark for 150 years – closed for restoration in 2020. Now, the four-year restoration project is being recognised on the international stage.

Feskekôrka means a lot to Gothenburg and is an integral part of the city’s identity. The fact that this fantastic piece of architectural history is now shining internationally and to have the entire team's efforts acknowledge feels significant. We’re very happy.
Magnus Bunner, lead architect, White Arkitekter

The restoration of Feskekôrka demonstrates how cultural and historical values can be preserved and enhanced while sensitively adapting a building to meet contemporary requirements for functionality, technology and accessibility. Completed in 2024, the iconic fish market hall has now reclaimed its position as a leading architectural landmark in the city. This marks its first major international recognition, awarded by a distinguished jury evaluating appearance, innovation, and the project’s social and environmental benefits.

There is no other projects of ours that compares to the renovation of Feskekôrka. Restoring lost values while ensuring future use required deep respect for the building’s spirit, extraordinary solutions, and close collaboration between all parties. The result couldn’t have been better.
Kajsa Wide, early-stage project manager, Higab

– Our ambition has been to revive the building’s unique character and space, working carefully to preserve its cultural and historical values. Every decision has been made with care, highlighting what makes Feskekôrka unique, says Viktor Göthe, Project Architect, White Arkitekter.

The jury’s statement

This project serves as a perfect example of how stripping back, rather than needlessly adding, can create clarity. The result is a clear and rational building that celebrates both its history and future use.
