Our proposal integrates this heritage into the urban environment through spatial design, collective memory and materiality, allowing its history to remain present and tangible.
White Arkitekter wins third prize in Stuttgart redevelopment competition
We are happy to share that White Arkitekter together with BLU Architekten and GREENBOX Landschaftsarchitekten have been awarded third prize in the international architecture competition for the redevelopment of the former Kodak site in Stuttgart.
Rather than replacing the existing structures, the design preserves and adapts key buildings, including the iconic Kodak building and the former boiler house. By combining reuse with new architecture, the proposal reduces climate impact while strengthening the site’s identity.
The previously enclosed Kodak site is opened up through a new landscape structure with inviting public spaces and active ground-floor uses that encourage interaction between neighbours. The proposal interprets and translates the competition brief’s motto, “Open your Mind”, into an urban design strategy that promotes openness, exchange and community.
The proposal demonstrates how industrial heritage can become a catalyst for sustainable urban transformation, preserving the memory of the place while creating an open, resilient and inclusive district for the future.
The jury valued the proposal for its clear integration of Kodak’s heritage, thoughtful reuse of existing buildings, well-structured and vibrant public spaces, climate-responsive urban design, and a strong landscape concept that unifies the area through a distinctive green corridor.
