Westerlundska Gymnasiet – Finalist for Building of the Year Award

For the second year in a row, a White project is in the running for Årets Bygge, Sweden’s most prestigious construction award. This year, Westerlundska Gymnasiet – Enköping’s new living room – is one of three finalists in the Samhällsfastigheter (Public Sector Buildings) category, following Hemlingborg in Gävle’s win last year.

Årets Bygge highlights excellence in Swedish construction, recognising projects that stand out in work environment, sustainability, time/quality/budget, technology/innovation, and collaboration. The award is presented by Byggindustrin, with winners announced on 18 March at the Construction Summit in Stockholm.

More than just a school, Westerlundska Gymnasiet serves as a community hub, accommodating 1,600 students while also providing spaces for municipal use. The 500-seat auditorium hosts both school events and Enköping’s municipal council meetings, while the makerspace and mini-auditoriums are available for external hire. The large-scale kitchen also prepares meals for care homes and preschools.

With a timber structure, natural stone entrance hall, and clay tile façade, the school’s inviting, durable, and sustainable design reflects a carefully considered approach to architecture, materiality, and community impact.

Winners will be announced on 18 March at the Construction Summit in Stockholm.

The innovative Hemlingborg project in Gävle, combining residential care, a school, a preschool, and a sports hall under one roof, won Årets Bygge 2024 in the Public Buildings category – the same category where Westerlundska Gymnasiet is a contender this year.
