Together we can raise the bar further

As 2023 comes to an end, we at White Arkitekter want to thank you for all the great collaborations and projects over the past year.

It has been a year of great contrasts with geopolitical turmoil and economic challenges for the construction and property industry on the one hand, while at the same time we have witnessed a growing determination in the business community to accelerate the sustainable transition. A slower pace offers space for reflection and creativity. We can go further by combining beauty and sustainability in our cities. We can take new steps by making better use of what is already built, reducing the climate impact of materials and designing for circularity.

Interest in sustainable construction is growing internationally. Throughout the year, we were invited to the Architecture Biennale in Venice, showcasing our focus on wood construction. During this event, we also had the opportunity to discuss the issue of biodiversity and how timber construction affects the forest. Sara Cultural Centre was featured in The Washington Post, Magasin X in Uppsala and Nodi in Gothenburg have received awards for their sustainable architecture, and in November White was named Architect of the Year by Dezeen, the world’s most influential magazine for architecture, form and design. These awards are a commitment to the future. Because with them come even higher expectations. Together with you ambitious clients and partners we can raise the bar further.

We can go further by combining beauty and sustainability in our cities. We can take new steps by making better use of what is already built, reducing the climate impact of materials and designing for circularity.

These ambitions give us hope for the future, but at the same time I am concerned about how we will ensure the supply of skills to our industry. We risk losing a couple of cohorts of talented young architects and engineers who cannot get a foothold in the labour market due to a declining rate of construction. Designing and building sustainable communities is a complex challenge that requires a high level of expertise, so we need to make the construction and property sector an attractive career choice for young people. At the time of writing, we are seeing signs of falling inflation and long-term interest rates, indicating that 2024 may be a year with better conditions for attracting talent to shape the industry’s future.

Once again, I would like to thank you for the great cooperation throughout the year. I hope you enjoy a well-deserved rest during the holidays. In 2024, we look forward to continuing to change the world for the better, one project at a time, together with you.
