The Stockholm Metro turns 75

Today, on October 1, the Stockholm Metro celebrates its 75th anniversary. Since 1950, the Stockholm Metro has been an integral part of daily life in the city and an international exemplar for combining public transport with art. The largest expansion in over thirty years is now underway – and we are proud to be part of it.

Commissioned by the Stockholm Region’s Office for Metro Expansion, White Arkitekter is designing two new stations, Barkarbystaden and Barkarby, on the four-kilometre extension of the Blue Line from Akalla. The stations will provide safe, accessible and sustainable environments, connecting the new district of Barkarbystaden with the wider region.

Working on the Metro is a unique assignment. It’s not just about technology and functionality, but about creating environments where people want to spend time – places that feel safe, inspiring, and enhance everyday experiences. Art is a natural part of the design and gives the Metro its distinctive character.

The stations reflect close collaboration between architects, engineers and artists. At Barkarbystaden station, the site’s history as an airfield is interpreted through artistic projections that create the sensation of floating above the clouds. Barkarby station, meanwhile, features sculptural granite elements guiding passengers through the spaces.

With service expected to begin in 2027, Barkarby will become a central hub for public transport in northern Stockholm and a vital part of the development of Barkarbystaden.

Happy 75th anniversary to the Stockholm Metro – we are look forward to continuing to contribute to a sustainable and human-centered city, both above and below ground.
