Hamnplan shortlisted for the Landmärket Award

A former parking area on the shores of Lake Mälaren has been transformed into a vibrant and welcoming public space in the heart of Sigtuna, just outside Stockholm. We are proud to share that Hamnplan has been shortlisted for the Landmärket Award 2025 – the Swedish Association of Architects’ prize for best landscape architecture.

In its south-facing location with direct access to the waterfront promenade, the site has been developed into a cohesive urban space for staying, moving and meeting. New sun loungers and benches frame the quay and make the most of the views across the water. The playful, double-sided seating elements offer flexibility and encourage activity and social interaction for people of all ages. A new cycle path and an integrated parking solution help create clear flows and a well-functioning overall environment.

Being shortlisted for the Landmärket Award is a wonderful recognition of the holistic approach that has shaped the project. Our ambition has been to create a contemporary public space where design, function and sustainability work together – a place that strengthens the city’s identity while meeting future needs.

Green structure that builds resilience
Generous planting areas frame the square and create a green transition between the public space and the parking area. The diverse plantings promote biodiversity, regulate temperature and manage as well as purify stormwater locally.

By integrating ecosystem services into the design, a robust and long-term solution has been created – one where climate benefits and aesthetic qualities go hand in hand.

An identity-defining ground and lighting
The square is unified by a herringbone pattern in natural stone and concrete paving. The surface carefully weaves the space together – referencing the classic interiors of the neighbouring villas while also paying homage to the site’s maritime setting. In sunlight, the paving shimmers like the waters of Lake Mälaren nearby.

Wire-suspended lighting frames the square and creates a warm, subtle glow that enhances both atmosphere and safety. The entrance to the site is marked by an artwork by Katarina Löfström.
