Sveafastigheter and White Arkitekter win land allocation competition for new neighbourhood

We’re proud to announce that together with Sveafastigheter, we are one of three winning teams in the land allocation competition for Silokvarteren in Västerås. In close collaboration with the City of Västerås, we will now take the next step in transforming this centrally located industrial area by Lake Mälaren into a new, vibrant urban district.

With its central, waterfront location, Silokvarteren will form an important link between the city centre and Lake Mälaren. The new travel center will help connect Västerås’ historic centre with its waterfront, strengthening the relationship between city and water. The site is home to Lantmännen’s silo buildings from the 1950s, and our ambition is to preserve and further develop parts of these industrial structures. This approach enables the area’s industrial heritage to be preserved and integrated with new environments in the emerging district.

When developing our cities, we must always begin with what already exists. The transformation of the silos will be a defining element for Silokvarteren and will add new chapters to the story of Västerås as a forward-looking hub for technology and innovation. Recognising the value of the built environments also creates opportunities for new investment and future living environments.
Martin Sundberg, Architect and Office Director at White Arkitekter Malmö

– We are incredibly pleased and grateful to be entrusted, together with Sveafastigheter and the City of Västerås, with this important task, Martin Sundberg continues.

The urban transformation will create the conditions for a mixed-use district with housing, workplaces, learning environments and cultural activities. Green spaces and public realms will contribute to a varied urban environment, offering room for everyday social encounters.

We are proud of the trust that, in close collaboration with the city of Västerås, JM and Arvet & Arwidsro, we will develop Silokvarteren into the city’s future landmark, a unique place in the best location in Västerås.
Erik Hävermark, CEO of Sveafastigheter

Building on what already exists
Our proposal is rooted in the existing resources and qualities already of the site. By transforming existing buildings and reusing materials, it is possible to preserve the area’s history while allowing new ideas to take shape. In evaluating the potential for reuse, our partner AKT II has played a central and decisive role.

The three winning teams are

JM AB, AART Architects and DELVA Landscape Architecture

Arvet & Arwidsro, Olsson Lyckefors Arkitektur and Outer Space Arkitekter

Sveafastigheter and White Arkitekter

In close collaboration with the City of Västerås, the three teams will jointly develop proposals for the detailed development plan for Silokvarteren. The work will lay the foundation for how the area can be transformed into a new, lively urban district and a future landmark in Västerås.
