We are proud to be a part of Nadija Children’s Hospital in Ukraine

White Arkitekter are proud to be a part of the international collaboration to bring a state-of-the-art children’s hospital to Ukraine. The need for mental and physical rehabilitation for war-affected children in Ukraine is urgent. Nadija Foundation is responding with a unique Nordic-Ukrainian initiative focused on building lasting mental and physical health infrastructure for children.

Nadija Children’s Hospital combines a dedicated research institute with a physical and a digital hospital. The project is currently in the early stages of development, with a feasibility study under way. Cristiana Caira, one of White Arkitekter’s most experienced healthcare specialists and a professor of healthcare architecture at Chalmers University, is involved in the planning of the physical hospital. Together with other experts in the fields of medicine and architecture, both local and international, she contributes to the project with knowledge from scientific research and best practice.

Having worked for many years in academia and in projects like Cambridge children’s hospital and Queen Silvia Children’s hospital in Gothenburg, I feel I have an ethical duty to share my knowledge and experience to make sure this hospital lives up to its full potential. Nadija means hope in Ukrainian. For me, this children’s hospital embodies that meaning – an architecture of hope and healing.
Cristiana Caira

Last week, Cristiana together with Jacob Sahlqvist, director of White Arkitekter’s Gothenburg office, attended the Nadija Symposium. An annual meeting point that brings together clinicians, researchers, and policymakers to sit side by side with philanthropists and representatives from civil society and the private sector. Cristiana Caira was one of the speakers, and her message was clear:

You can’t just copy and paste; this is a country at war with completely different conditions from what we are used to. Our solutions need to be grounded in evidence and at the same time respond to the unique needs of the Ukrainian children and their families.
Cristiana Caira

We are grateful for the chance to be a part of this important project and for the successful partnerships. Together we are taking steps to making sure that Ukraine’s children can get the best support towards a healthy and secure future.
