Grevhagsskolan wins the Rödfärgspriset: ‘A bold, beautiful, and welcoming building’

Once again, our timber architecture has been recognised with a prestigious award. In collaboration with Eksjö Kommunfastigheter, White Arkitekter has received the Rödfärgspriset for the green (!) Grevhagsskolan in Eksjö.

The Rödfärgspriset celebrates innovative architecture where timber and traditional Falu paint take centre stage. Grevhagsskolan, built with a 100% solid wood structure and painted in green Falu paint, honours Eksjö’s rich tradition of timber construction, the Swedish classic Falu paint, and its verdant surroundings by the Eksjöån river.

This is the result of dedication, teamwork, and a shared vision to create buildings that serve the community while balancing cost, climate, and quality. The highest praise, however, is that the students and staff at Grevhagsskolan absolutely love and thrive in their new school building.

The jury’s motivation:
‘The placement of a building on its site is an architectural decision that defines the key conditions for experiencing space, both indoors and out. Here, this choice has enhanced and elevated a shared outdoor space of great importance. The outdoor area is seamlessly and invitingly connected to the central interior space, creating an openness rarely seen in this type of building. The choice of colour adds a fresh and appealing dimension, while the large volume has been skilfully articulated, reducing its scale and making the connection to the ground a pleasant and welcoming place. Light shafts intersect the building, offering easy orientation between interior and exterior spaces. The nuanced façade and roof overhang create a beautiful interplay of light and shadow. A bold, beautiful, and welcoming building.’

Grevhagsskolan in Eksjö, Sweden

Grevhagsskolan’s new sports hall, complete with adjoining classrooms, is a valuable addition to Eksjö, serving both the school and local associations. Rooted in Eksjö’s timber construction strategy, it reflects the municipality’s commitment to sustainability and its building traditions.
