Observation tower Kärven inaugurated

– We hope that Kärven will evoke pride among Varberg residents and spark curiosity in all who come to visit. It should be just as interesting to view it from a distance as it is to enter, or enjoy the amazing view from the very top, says Lukas Nordström, Lead Architect, White Arkitekter.

The vision for Kärven was to create a structure that would not only captivate visitors with its stunning aesthetics but also serve as a focal point for the beauty of the surroundings. Getterön is a haven for nature enthusiasts, attracting nearly 80,000 visitors annually. And beyond its striking exterior, Kärven offers a welcoming haven for visitors, providing shelter from wind and rain, and creating a communal space for birdwatching groups gathering or people simply taking a moment to appreciate the environment.

In 2019 Kärven won the Varberg Municipality architectural competition, which sought a unique new landmark for Fågelbacka, Getterön. Simultaneously, the traditional function of an observation tower was equally required. A unanimous jury emphasized that Kärven stands out due to its shape, which evokes thoughts and questions for spectators. The simple yet intriguing form stimulates contemplation – how can something straight be perceived as curved? The striking simplicity and playfulness of the construction have already rendered considerable curiosity and attention both in Sweden and internationally, even before its inauguration.

Lukas Nordström has been the lead architect in the project’s later stages, following Ulla Antonsson and Mattias Lind, who were both involved in the early stages.

With its innovative design and breathtaking views, Kärven is already on its way to become a beloved landmark. Even more so since contractor MTA Bygg installed a live webcam during construction, allowing the public to witness the intricate assembly process.

A galvanized spiral staircase winds its way up the tower, offering glimpses of the surrounding landscape. Mezzanine levels provide resting spots along the climb, inviting visitors to pause and admire the captivating interplay of light filtering through the wooden ribs.

Finally, upon reaching the summit, visitors are greeted with breathtaking panoramic vistas of the nature reserve’s diverse landscapes. A wraparound standing table and a comfortable bench offer ample seating, ensuring that visitors of all ages can fully immerse themselves in one of Sweden’s unique natural gems and its inhabitants.

Kärven will be inaugurated on August 30.
