White Arkitekter is contributing with a whole new borough in an area which is filled with contrasts. The design is steadily built on the history of that area, which is mirrored and strengthened by a dynamic look and feel. Office buildings will be complemented with public facilities at street level.
With its 12 floors, the Våghuset building helps change the face of Gothenburg, as it is exposed to the busy Järntorget, a pivotal square in the city. The building is glazed with rounded edges and the façade towards East displays a colossal and spectacular wave-shaped form. Shiny glass surfaces and aprons lend a mirroring, water-like impression, registering the reflections of city life from dusk till dawn.
A 15-storey brick high-rise dominates the other part of the borough, Brick Studios. The design, articulated and consistent with stones and varying volumetric, is dynamic from all angles . A restricted selection of materials creates a strong identity and makes a mark in the city’s landscape.
The lower building structure is inspired by industrial ports. Masthuggskajen has been an important part of the port city of Gothenburg – an identity trait which is being re-interpreted and modernised. The green roof between the tall buildings is to become a place from which we can watch over the river and the day-to-day Gothenburg in motion.
