Arlanda Airport – Verandan

Arlanda Airport – Verandan

Together with Swedavia, we have designed Verandan, a new large marketplace at Terminal 5, Arlanda airport in Stockholm. The new glulam Verandan is a 3 500-sqm extension featuring a new café and restaurant area giving the airport a new, spectacular living room while also making it more modern and efficient.

Arlanda’s new living room

The architecture of Verandan is light, open and welcoming—reflecting the Nordic qualities of simplicity, warmth and functionality. A visible glulam structure is one of the project’s defining features, with beams extending up to 18 metres. The exposed wooden columns and roof create a strong architectural character and a sense of spaciousness rarely found in airport environments.

Sustainability at the forefront

Sustainability was a key driver throughout the project. We explored ways to reuse and recycle existing façade glass to minimise the carbon footprint. The amount of steel in the façade and framing was reduced, and existing natural stone floors were carefully polished and preserved instead of being replaced. We also used low-impact concrete to further reduce environmental impact.

The project also features a large renovation to reconfigure and widen a passenger passageway, as well as areas for shops and other commercial spaces. Solutions and functions to make Arlanda a more efficient, modern and attractive airport.
