Feskekôrka finalist in this year’s Dezeen Awards

Dezeen Awards celebrates the world’s best architecture, interiors, and design. Now in its eighth year, it has become one of the most coveted accolades for architects and designers worldwide. Feskekôrka is one of only six projects to make it to the shortlist in the Heritage Project category.

Designed by Victor von Gegerfelt and inaugurated in 1874, Feskekôrka draws inspiration from Nordic stave churches and neo-Gothic ideals – influences that gave rise to the building’s popular nickname, “Feskekôrka” (the Fish Church). In 2018, the property owner Higab initiated the renovation, bringing together contractors, conservation specialists, and technical consultants around a shared goal: to revive this much-loved landmark.

While heritage preservation has been central to the project, the intention was never to recreate the building in its original form. Instead, the ambition has been to achieve a cohesive expression that captures its unique atmosphere – a balance of robustness and complexity, a refined simplicity.

The winners in each project category will be announced live during the Dezeen Awards ceremony on 25 November at Exhibition White City in London. All 17 winners will then compete for the prestigious overall title, Architecture Project of the Year.

White Arkitekter has previously enjoyed success at Dezeen Awards, including the title Architect of the Year – recognising the world’s leading architecture practice – two years ago. Another Gothenburg landmark, the office building Nodi, also won its category four years ago.
